Launch of first certified renewable, bio-based “Ultem” grades
Saudi Arabian chemicals and plastics giant Sabic (Riyadh; www.sabic.com) has announced the introduction of a portfolio of certified renewable bio-based “Ultem” amorphous polymers that provide the same high performance and processability as standard materials.

The polyetherimide (PEI), bio-based resins can potentially reduce carbon footprints by up to 10% compared to fossil-based Ultem grades. Using a mass balance approach, for every 100 kg of the latest grade of Ultem resin produced, Sabic replaces 25.5 kg of a fossil-based feedstock with bio-based materials derived from waste or residue.

The bio-based materials are said to meet the same regulatory compliance as traditional Ultem resins, while its mechanical properties allow for their consideration as an alternative material to sulfone polymers such as PSU, PESU and PPSU, said Greg Stoddard, director of technology and innovation at Sabic.
