PVC profiles: Multi-million investment in manufacturing facilities / Restructuring
HW Plastics (Snape Road, Macclesfield, GB-Cheshire SK10 2NZ) is undertaking a multi-million pound (sterling) investment and restructuring programme designed to maintain the company´s position as the UK´s leading manufacturer of PVC window profiles and cellular PVC building components. The programme, says the company, recognises the increasing competition in the UK market and is intended to ensure that it retains its position as a low cost and efficient manufacturer. The investment will be focused on the HW Plastics´ operations in Macclesfield and Scunthorpe.

By the end of March 2003 the site in Macclesfield, already one of the largest extrusion operations in the UK, will have undergone an expansion programme to enable it to produce all the company´s requirements for window profiles. As a result, the Gloucester factory will close.

Scunthorpe is to be the centre for cellular PVC production, manufacturing components for the window trim, cladding and roof-line markets. It will incorporate a new 3,650 square metre extension and house all the extruders currently in use at the Congleton plant. Congleton will become the company´s headquarters and manufacturing centre for post-extru- sion operations, such as foiling. The company says the restructuring programmes will cause some redundancies but that it hopes to minimise them by transferring personnel between manufacturing sites.

“The Heywood Williams Group board have continued to back our ambitious plans to further develop our window profile and cellular building components businesses,” says HW Plastics chairman, Mike Guerin. “Our job is to ensure we improve our service to customers and increase our level of manufacturing excellence.”

A member of the Heywood Williams Group (Huddersfield, GB-West Yorkshire HD3 3AR; ( www.heywoodwilliams.com), HW Plastics was formed out of the merger of two subsidiary companies, Heywood Plastics and Heywood Building Products. It has a turnover of GBP 100m and 800 employees, and is opening a new 15,450 square metre warehouse and distribution centre, at Trentham Lakes, Stoke-on- Trent, in January.
