BASF (Ludwigshafen, Germany; www.basf.de) said it has started up the second ethylene oxide plant and besides several downstream plants at its Antwerp Verbund in Belgium. The project, said to cost over EUR 500 mn, has a total capacity of 400,000 t/y for ethylene oxide and its derivatives combined. However, Plasteurope.com calculations based on previously announced BASF data show that a pure nominal capacity of ethylene oxide of around 210,000 t/y is likely.
BASF Antwerp has increased the number of employees at the site by more than 100 in connection with the start-up, said Jan Remeysen, CEO of the group subsidiary.
