Industry associations European Plastics Converters (EuPC, Brussels; www.eupc.org) and Plastics Europe (Brussels; www.plasticseurope.org) have opened a public consultation on their intention to launch a voluntary certification scheme for Ocean Clean Sweep (OCS), a programme to control and reduce plastic pellet loss into the environment.

The associations had agreed last year to work together on developing certification by 2022 (see Plasteurope.com of 11.01.2021). EuPC and Plastics Europe said the scheme aims to control and document compliance with OCS requirements, targeting a reduction in pellet loss across the entire plastics supply chain, as well as supporting the effective, harmonised, and quantifiable implementation of the OCS programme.

They added that companies compliant with the certification scheme – and externally audited – will be listed on an online public register. Interested parties can comment on the certification scheme until 29 May 2022.
