EXXONMOBIL
First large-scale advanced plastics waste recycling facility to be built in US state of Texas / 500,000 t/y more global recycling capacity planned by 2026
US energy and petrochemicals giant ExxonMobil (Irving, Texas; www.exxonmobil.com) has announced its intention to build its first large-scale advanced plastics waste recycling facility at a domestic site in Baytown, Texas, with operations expected to start by year-end 2022.

The company said the facility will scale-up a proprietary recycling process for converting plastics waste into raw materials that was validated in a trial test in Baytown earlier this year (see Plasteurope.com of 31.03.2021).

The plant is to initially have the capacity to recycle 30,000 t/y of plastics waste. ExxonMobil plans to add up to 500,000 t/y of advanced reclaim capacity globally by year-end 2026, said Karen McKee, president of ExxonMobil Chemical. Commercial volumes of the certified circular polymers are set to be available by the end of 2021. ExxonMobil obtained certifications through the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus (ISCC Plus) process.
