Packaging specialist Avery Dennison (Glendale, US / www.averydennison.com) has launched a recovery system to collect and recycle used paper and filmic label liners in countries across Europe. The system, “AD Circular”, will launch in eight countries during the first half of 2021, including France, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the UK. It will then launch in other European countries in the second half of the year.

Avery Dennison said companies will be able to use an online web application to schedule a pickup of used label liners. Material made from recycled liners will be used in new packaging materials and other products. Collection and transport of used liners through AD Circular will comply with EU regulations, and the costs will be comparable to existing waste-disposal services, the group said.

Burak Sahbaz, Avery Dennison’s senior director for marketing and sustainability, said the programme’s goal was to recycle 75% of the label waste it brings to the European market by 2025. Recycling 1 kg of liner avoids the emission of 2.28 kg of carbon dioxide, he added.

Towards the end of 2020, Avery Dennison also helped create an initiative to identify and scale recycling and re-use solutions for self-adhesive liner and matrix materials in Europe (see Plasteurope.com of 03.11.2020).
