Veolia Umweltservice West, a German branch of French waste management group Veolia (Paris; www.veolia.com), commissioned a new sorting plant for LDPE film scrap in Salzgitter / Germany on 28 May 2020. The plant has a capacity of 13,000 t/y for sorting film scrap from industrial and commercial sources using infrared technology. A company spokesperson declined to comment on the amount invested upon enquiry by Plasteurope.com.

“The film recycling concept we had already successfully implemented at the Morschheim site [in Germany] now has been adopted at the Salzgitter plant,” said Markus Binding, managing director of Veolia Umweltservice West. “After the devastating fire in April 2019, we made a conscious decision to strategically develop additional independent locations.” Next year, the environmental services provider intends to commission a film sorting facility with a 10,000 t/y capacity in Planig / Germany.

According to the group, it processes a volume of more than 100,000 t/y of plastics in Germany, split between post-consumer waste from the deposit system for disposable beverage bottles, household collection of light packaging waste as well as industrial and commercial scrap materials. In its three business segments of Water, Waste and Energy Management, Veolia Deutschland generated sales of EUR 1.88 bn in 2019.
