New barrier for PET packaged food and beverages
Speciality chemicals group Clariant (Muttenz / Switzerland; www.clariant.com) has created “CESA ProTect”, which the company says extends the shelf life of packaged food and drinks. The new brand of additive masterbatches is intended for monolayer PET packaging and other polyester-based materials, such as dairy products and coffee capsules.

“PET is already a good barrier material,” Clariant global product manager Antonello Decortes said, “but sensitive applications may still suffer from oxygen inlet.” The active ingredients in CESA ProTect act as “oxygen scavengers” by absorbing O2 molecules. CESA ProTect is also suitable for refrigerated products.

At recommended dosages, finished containers of different sizes and shapes maintain a level of transparency in line with market expectations, according to Clariant. Exactly how long the additive masterbatch can protect food and beverages depends on a number of factors, including additive loading, package size and design. Food contact approvals are pending.
