TORAY
Expansion of carbon fibre capacity in Mexico and Hungary / Fusion of US activities
The world’s largest carbon fibres producer, Toray (Tokyo / Japan; www.toray.com), is integrating Toray Carbon Fibers America (CFA, Decatur, Alabama) and Toray Composites (TCA, Tacoma, Washington / USA), thereby combining the US manufacturing and sales of carbon fibre and prepreg, respectively. This is the first step this year toward the scheduled operation of carbon fibre yarns production in Spartanburg, South Carolina (see Plasteurope.com of 17.11.2015).
Beginning April 2017, the new name of this single business will be Toray Composite Materials America (CMA, Tacoma). The new company will have sales of approximately EUR 580m and about 1,000 employees.
At the same time, Zoltek Companies (Bridgeton, Missouri / USA; www.zoltek.com) plans to increase large tow carbon fibre production. Firstly, the Toray subsidiary plans to double the capacity at its Mexican plant to more than 10,000 t/y. Secondly, a further expansion is planned for the Zoltek plant in Hungary. Large tow carbon fibre is in demand for automotive engineering and wind power applications, both of which are promising strong growth in the coming years.
