German blow moulding specialist Kautex Textron (Bonn; www.kautex.de) has broken ground on a new plant in China to make plastic fuel tanks for cars that meet emission standards in California / USA.
According to a report in the Changjiang Daily, work on the plant in Wuhan, Hubei province, started on 28 October. The plant will have technology that can produce gas tanks with fuel evaporative emissions as low as 0.3g of hydrocarbons per vehicle per day.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2017, mainly supplying nearby car assembly plants in Wuhan, Xiangyang, Changsha and Zhengzhou.
An initial investment of CNY 100m (USD 15.7m) will give 3,800m² of manufacturing space and plans exist to expand to 7,500m². At full capacity, the plant is expected to reach an annual output worth CNY 500m.
The plant is Kautex’s fifth manufacturing plant in China, adding to sites in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changchun and Chongqing.
According to the Chinese government, the automotive hub of Wuhan has an annual output (including suppliers) of CNY 200 bn and 1.1m assembled cars.
