US custom compounder and distributor PolyOne (Cleveland, Ohio; www.polyone.com) on 24 October announced that it had reached a definite agreement to acquire plastic sheet, compounds and packaging solutions manufacturer Spartech (Clayton, Missouri / USA; www.spartech.com). The USD 393m (about EUR 303m) deal, which includes the assumption of Spartech’s USD 142m in net debt, is expected to close in early 2013.

PolyOne said the purchase would expand its specialty portfolio with adjacent technologies in what it said were “attractive markets”. Spartech has a strong North American market position in sheet, rigid barrier packaging and specialty cast acrylic technologies. Its key customer markets are the aerospace, security, packaging and healthcare sectors. PolyOne characterised the deal, which is expected to yield annualised synergies of USD 65m, as a “bolt-on acquisition with opportunity for global expansion.”
