PHA certified as biodegradable in water / World's first biopolymer made from sugar cane waste
Italian biotechnology company Bio-on (Bologna; www.bio-on.it) says its “Minerv” PHA SC (sugar cane) polyester has been certified as biodegradable in water by certification company Vinçotte (Vilvoorde / Belgium; www.aib-vincotte.com).

The certification confirms that the material, which is the world’s first biopolymer made from sugar cane waste, is completely biodegradable in water at ambient temperature, Bio-on says. “For the first time in the world, PHA is obtained from molasses or intermediate sugar cane juices or from its by-products,” the company states.

Minerv PHA SC can be used to make a range of rigid or flexible objects, replacing materials such as PET, PP, PS and PE. It is suitable for injection moulding or extrusion, and can be created with melting points ranging from 40°C to more than 180°C.

Bio-on was founded in 2007 to develop natural products and solutions, obtained from renewable sources or agricultural processing waste materials.
