Partnership to develop food packaging applications for recycled PS
US styrenics producer Trinseo (Berwyn, Pennsylvania; www.trinseo.com) is collaborating with Cedap (Monaco; www.cedap.mc), a specialist in sheet extrusion for the packaging industry, to use chemically recycled polystyrene to develop and test food grade rPS packaging.

The global chemicals producer also said it will provide technical expertise to a project to develop a monomaterial PS yogurt container, which is being led by French recycling consortium Citeo (Paris; www.citeo.com) and includes Cedap as a participant. “The development of a monomaterial yogurt pot would enable greater ease of recyclability and in turn unlock the opportunity for a new life in other applications via chemical or mechanical recycling of PS,” said Nicolas Joly, global business director for PS and feedstocks at Trinseo.

The US company is participating in a PS chemical recycling project in Europe with Agilyx (Tigard, Oregon / USA; www.agilyx.com) and Ineos Styrolution (Frankfurt / Germany; www.ineos-styrolution.com) – see Plasteurope.com of 11.07.2019. In North America, Americas Styrenics (AmSty), a JV between Trinseo and Chevron Phillips Chemical (The Woodlands, Texas / USA; www.cpchem.com), operates a JV with Agilyx, named Regenyx, dedicated to recycling post-consumer PS into new PS products.
