Is French oil giant about to replace ExxonMobil at mega project in Ras Laffan?
There are "mounting signs" that ExxonMobil (Houston, Texas / USA; www.exxonmobil.com) plans to or already has cancelled the mega project in Ras Laffan it had entered into with Qatar Petroleum (QP, Doha / Qatar; www.qp.com.qa), the Wall Street Journal reports. Citing sources in the know, the journal said there are ongoing intensive discussions about Total Petrochemicals (Paris / France; www.totalpetrochemicals.biz) replacing ExxonMobil in the project. The former already has numerous activities in the emirate. Current plans foresee the establishment of a 1.6m t/y steam cracker in Ras Laffan, to go on stream in 2014, as well as two PE units of 650,000 t/y each and a 700,000 t/y MEG line – see Plasteurope.com of 08.01.2010. The entire project is valued at USD 6 bn.
