Compostable PLA alternative for XPS food packaging launched

PLA manufacturer TotalEnergies Corbion (Gorinchem, Netherlands; www.totalenergies-corbion.com) has launched Luminy Foam 50F, a new range of PLA grades for extrusion-foamed packaging.
The material is designed as an alternative to conventional extruded polystyrene (XPS) for packaging fresh foodstuffs such as meat and fish. According to the company, the biobased and industrially compostable material has a density comparable to that of XPS and similar functional properties.

The sugarcane-based PLA reduces carbon footprint by at least 70% compared with XPS foam, the company said. Thanks to its high melt strength, the material can reportedly be processed stably on existing XPS extrusion lines without the need for additional additives, chain extenders or reactive processing aids. The material has been approved for food contact by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
