New MDI splitter to serve Southeast Asia
The trend towards increased production of higher-value MDI grades – already underway at Dow Chemical and Huntsman – is now being followed by competitor Tosoh (Tokyo; www.tosoh.com).

Tosoh Vietnam Polyurethane, a subsidiary of the Japanese company, said plans to build an MDI splitter with a capacity of 100,000 t/y at its Vietnamese plant in Phu My, 60 km south of Ho Chi Minh city. However, construction is not scheduled to begin until the end of 2024, with commissioning planned for October 2026. The additional volume is primarily intended to serve the Southeast Asian market.

Tosoh does not produce MDI at the site, however, but is expected to supply the raw isocyanate from its main site in Nanyo, Japan, where three lines with a combined capacity of 400,000 t/y of MDI are installed.
