“It is no longer enough to simply produce packaging. The companies in our sector will also have to offer services such as transport or packaging design” explained Paul J. Griswold, vice-president of Tenneco Inc (Evanston, IL, USA) with responsibility for the Tenneco Packaging Division. Tenneco is thus intending to split off its Packaging and Automotive Divisions into two independent companies in autumn 1999. Both companies will still belong to the holding. Tenneco is expecting independence to bring a pooling of core competences and an expansion of the market position.

In 1998, Tenneco Packaging achieved sales of USD 2.8bn worldwide, including 600m in Europe. There are eighteen companies in the Group here, including Kobusch Folien GmbH (D-34414 Warburg), Sengewald Verpackungen GmbH (D-33780 Halle), Nord-West Verpackungen GmbH (D-51789 Lindlar), Sentinel GmbH (D-73441 Bopfingen), Ambassador Packaging Ltd (UK-Cheshire CW7 3PD), Jiffy Packaging Co Ltd (UK-Cheshire CW7 3QR) and Airpack S.p.a. (I-20070 Ossago, Lodigiano). The company claims that Tenneco Packaging Europe is already the market leader for protectant and detergent packaging and holds second place for nappy packaging, egg cartons and special medical packaging solutions. The company is expecting high growth from its all-in solutions, which include packaging design and the organisation of transport from the works to the retailers.
