Launch of recycling tech for contaminated PS / Viable for food-contact applications

Swiss industrial engineering and manufacturing group Sulzer (Winterthur; www.sulzer.com) has introduced a new technology to chemically recycle “heavily contaminated” polystyrene waste. The company noted that the resulting material can be used in food-contact applications.

Sulzer said its EcoStyrene technology is able to process previously unrecyclable PS waste contaminated with flame retardants and food residue into feedstock for new products.

“Our EcoStyrene technology provides a practical, economically viable answer even for the most challenging feedstock,” said Ilja Mikenberg, global head of process solutions at Sulzer Chemtech.
