STEWING GROUP
In tremendous shape: Large-capacity hydraulic press for super-large plastic parts
The Stewing Group (HQ: Barbarastr. 50, D-46282 Dorsten) has been manufacturing plastic products for the past 30 years. Around 14 years ago the company began manufacturing industrial parts from structural foam. In 1993 the company set new technological limits in the production of super-large one-piece plastic parts, the first product being the three-dimensional body of a telephone booth. It was manufactured on the GSA 25/87, a large-capacity injection moulding machine specially developed for this purpose and realized through the cooperation of several companies.
Dorstener Maschinenfabrik AG (PO Box 210163, D-46268 Dorsten), a member company of the Stewing Group, developed and built the required four-column press which is the largest in Europe and has a clamping force of 25,000 kN. Standing at right angles to this 16 m high press are three partially mobile injection units from Battenfeld GmbH (D-58540 Meinerzhagen). These units together achieve a shot weight of almost 90 kg. This large-capacity injection moulding machine has been designed for use with various processes, e.g. conventional and multicomponent injection moulding, sandwich moulding, gas injection (Airmould) and structural foam moulding. When the injection units are "undocked", the press can be used for the manufacture of large-area GMT parts.
The first mould to be used in this super-large machine is the largest and heaviest injection mould in Europe, weighing 185 t and measuring 3,650 mm in length, 2,280 mm in width and 3,150 mm in height. It was manufactured by the toolmaking firm of Zimmermann Formenbau (Blaumühlenweg 5, D-35075 Gladenbach-Erdhausen). The project, which ran under the motto "Dimension through Precision", was realized in only 15 months. The first parts, weighing approximately 60 kg, were produced at Stewing subsidiary Uniemetaal Kunststoffbetrieb GmbH (Bockwitzer Str. 85, D-01979 Lauchhammer). – The Stewing group, which employs 2,200 people worldwide, has a turnover of approximately DM 500m (1993).
