Spanish plastics sector shows dynamic growth / Injection moulding centres at Barcelona Valencia, Madrid and Alicante / New AMI guide to the injection moulding industry published
The Spanish plastics industry has shown dynamic growth over the past ten years, and the country now accounts for nearly 10% of the western European market. Since 1991, consumption has risen by around 6% on the annual average, with more than 3.1m tonnes used in 2001. However, projections for the Spanish market from 2002 to 2005 show growth slowing down to 4%, the market research company Applied Market Information (AMI, GB-Bristol; www.amiplastics.com) says in the recently published third edition of its industry guide to the Spanish injection moulding sector, which also identifies the 750 most important players.

For 2002-2005, consumption of plastics by the Spanish sector is projected to grow by 1-2% above the average for thermoplastics overall. Polypropylene leads the consumption list with around 313,000 t processed in 2001. This is followed by PE with 115,000 t and PS with 103,000 t. Trailing at some distance are ABS/SAN with 64,000 t, PA with 48,000 t and PVC with 25,000 t.

On the whole, 735,000 t of thermoplastics are used annually by Spanish injection moulders. This is the largest segment behind film extrusion with 870,000 t. Some 442,000 t are processed by blow moulding, 418,000 t in pipe and profile extrusion, 135,000 t in fibre extrusion and 117,000 t in sheet extrusion. The most important customer markets are packaging (25.7%) and automotive (25.2%). Far behind are household appliances (11.4%), electrical goods (11.2%), furniture (5.9%) and building).

As the report notes, Spain´s injection moulding sector is strongly focused on the automotive industry. Among its leading international customers are Guardian (www.guardian.com), Venture (www.venture.com), Visteon (www.visteon.com), Schefenacker (www.schefenacker.com) and Faurecia (www.faurecia.com). But Spanish groups such as Grupo Iberofón, (www.iberofon.es), Zanini Auto Grup (www.zanini.com) and Mondragón Corporación Cooperativa (www.mondragon.mcc.es) also hold important positions in the market.

The Spanish injection moulding industry´s production sites are scattered throughout the country, whereby the Barcelona region has the largest share of facilities, followed by production centres near Valencia and Madrid as well as smaller clusters in Basque country. Somewhat unique is the concentration of manufacturers of toys and household goods in the Alicante region.
