Chlorine plants at Tavaux to be converted to the Membrane process / Completion by end of 2012
Solvay (Brussels / Belgium; www.solvay.com) is converting its entire 360,000 t/y chlorine capacity at Tavaux / France, to membrane electrolysis up to the end of 2010. The Belgian-based group said the conversion will reduce consumption of electrical energy in chlorine production by 25%, while at the same time reducing direct and indirect CO2 emissions by 19,200 t/y to improve its environmental footprint. The project, which will cost EUR 83m, will qualify for French state aid to investment.

Three chlorine plants are currently in operation at Tavaux, each with output capability of 120,000 t/y. Only one uses the membrane process; the other two use the less environmentally friendly mercury process. Output will be consolidated into two production lines – a new facility with capacity of 240,000 t/y and a converted 120,000 t/y unit. To avoid potential supply bottlenecks, all of the existing plants will continue to produce until the conversion process is completed. Solvay said the upgrade at Tavaux will enhance competitiveness at its biggest production site, which benefits from largely integrated production for PVC specialities such as PVDC and PVDF as well as other product such as caustic soda, epichlorohydrin and PVC. Earlier this year, the group concluded a new long-term electricity supply contract at more favourable terms.
