Blaze rips through Shanghai petrochemical plant / Cracker and downstream units reportedly offstream
A fire that broke out on 8 September 2011 at Shanghai Secco Petrochemical’s (Shanghai / China; www.secco.com.cn) alkene production facility in Shanghai’s Jinshan District has reportedly forced the company to take offstream its 1.3m t/y ethylene cracker at the site. Several news media report that firefighters battled to contain the blaze until the early morning hours of 9 September, with no casualties reported.
It remains unclear when the cracker will restart or how the outage has affected the downstream units, which include 300,000 t/y of HDPE, 300,000 t/y of LLDPE and 250,000 t/y of PP. The blaze reportedly also forced the group to idle its 260,000 t/y acrylonitrile plant.
Shanghai Secco Petrochemical is a 50:50 joint venture between BP (London / UK; www.bp.com) and Chinese state-owned chemical giant Sinopec (Beijing; www.sinopec.com).
