Carbon fibre producer takes sole ownership of Benteler-SGL / Deal expands serial production capabilities and gains sites in Austria
Following an in-depth analysis, SGL Technologies Composites Holding, a fully owned subsidiary of SGL Carbon (Wiesbaden / Germany; www.sglgroup.com), has decided to buy the half-share in its joint venture with Benteler Carbon Composites (Paderborn / Germany; www.benteler.com). The deal is subject to regulatory approval, but should be completed by the end of 2017.
"The complete takeover of Benteler-SGL enables us to expand our serial production capabilities for components made from fibre-reinforced composites. In future, we will be able to offer our customers one-stop-shop solutions along all steps of the value chain, from carbon fibres to materials and components," explained SGL’s CEO, Jürgen Köhler, adding that the company’s serial production expertise would also be made available to industries other than automotive.
Laurent Favre, CEO of Benteler Automotive, said the automotive market was changing rapidly and the sale of its shares would enable it to invest more in its core business of aluminium and steel processing.
Following the acquisition, Benteler-SGL’s sites in Ried and Ort, both in Austria, will become part of SGL’s Composites – Fibres & Materials (CFM) business unit, complementing its "Lightweight and Application Center" in Meitingen / Germany that was launched last year.
The Benteler-SGL joint venture was founded in 2008 to develop and produce lightweight composite components based on fibreglass and carbon fibres for the car industry (see Plasteurope.com of 29.04.2008), and counts manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Lamborghini, Porsche and Volvo among its customers. The jv generated sales of around EUR 33m in 2016.
