SCHÜTZ
Expansion of Spanish packaging production / Investments into US-based production in Pasadena / Additional acquisition in Mexico
Schütz (Selters / Germany; www.schuetz.net) is expanding its activities in Spain, the US and Mexico. At its site in Tarragona, its main plant on the Iberian Peninsula, the industrial packaging manufacturer has invested in new infrastructure and machinery upgrades.

During previous measures, Schütz Ibérica had redesigned the hall complex for intermediate bulk container (IBC) production and replaced an assembly line, thus improving automation. Its injection moulding division has now been pooled in a 2,000 m² hall and expanded by an additional machine, with the aim of shortening production cycles in plastic pallet and edge protector production. In addition, Schütz has expanded logistics and storage areas and built two new silos, each with a capacity of 100 t of PE granules. The most recent investments include the installation of a new 6-layer blow moulding line for the production of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and interior containers.

The measures, which were initiated in August 2017 and should be completed by the first quarter of 2018, are increasing the hall area in Tarragona from 1,000 m² to over 4,200 m². Schütz has another Spanish plant in El Pla de Santa Maria, where drinking water and heating oil tanks are manufactured, and an additional site for reconditioning in Alcalá de Henares.

Further investments have flowed into the company’s US plant in Pasadena, Texas. An additional hall complex has expanded the production and storage areas by about 11,200 m². The additional space was also used to install a second assembly line, so that the previously needed retooling of IBC production when switching between 1,000 l and 1,250 l models is no longer necessary. The construction of a second blow moulding line for producing 210 l plastic tight-head drums is still in progress and a new reconditioning line is also planned to be commissioned in 2018. The Pasadena site is part of a network of 11 Schütz locations in the US.

Schütz will also buy its Mexican competitor Envases y Laminados (Elsa, Tultitlán; www.elsamex.mx) in order to expand activities in the NAFTA region. According to Schütz, a purchase contract has already been signed. The transaction should be completed in early 2018, once Mexican antitrust authorities have approved the deal. Elsa has five production sites in Mexico and the company has been collaborating with Schütz on IBC and plastic drum production and commercialisation for 20 years.
