Circular resins from mixed and marine waste said to be world first / Products made of these materials due soon
Saudi petrochemicals group Sabic (Riyadh; www.sabic.com) and Malay plastic recycler Heng Hiap Industries (HHI, Johor; www.henghiap.com) have announced a collaboration to create what the resin maker is calling the first certified circular polymers produced through advanced recycling of mixed and used ocean-bound plastic. The supplier said its “Trucircle” polyolefins made from such waste are to be used by customers over the coming months.

Marine plastics collected from waterways and inland areas predominantly in Malaysia is sent to HHI for conversion into pyrolysis oil used to make the materials, which Sabic said have been certified under the Zero Plastic Oceans accreditation. It noted that HHI is the first organisation to receive certification confirming the materials it recycles qualify as ocean-bound.

Sabic said earlier this year that it is working with UK energy multinational BP (London; www.bp.com) to create a circular system a at site in Gelsenkirchen / Germany, where both are producers (see Plasteurope.com of 09.03.2021).
