RecyClass greenlights packaging products by Leonhard Kurz and Hoffmann Neopac

Recycling initiative RecyClass (Brussels; www.recyclass.eu) has announced the approval of two packaging products that passed its recycling and sorting evaluation compatibility tests. Created by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE, Brussels; www.plasticsrecyclers.eu), RecyClass said it had tested the “Cold Transfer with EP Platina 3015” process developed by Leonhard Kurz (Fuerth / Germany; www.leonhard-kurz.com) and found it was fully compatible with European rigid HDPE stream recycling.

RecyClass also gave the thumbs-up to Hoffmann Neopac’s (Thun / Switzerland; www.hoffmann-neopac.com) “Polyfoil MMB Tube PF528” – a metallised PP-barrier tube for food, cosmetic, dental and pharmaceutical applications.

RecyClass said Neopac’s product was the first PP tube/cap combination it had tested successfully. The analysis was carried out by IKTR, as per RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for polypropylene containers. The test showed that plastics generated by the recycling process could be used in high-end, or even closed-loop applications, such as PP blow-moulded bottles using up to 25% of the material. It also met criteria for sorting, according to RecyClass’ Sorting Evaluation Protocol (see Plasteurope.com of 27.10.2021), showing that the metallised tube was sortable within the PP rigid stream.

Meanwhile, Leonhard Kurz’s Cold Transfer with EP Platina 3015 also met sorting criteria, as laid out by RecyClass, which said the approval on decorative technology for HDPE packaging offered “yet another example of how innovation and adapting different design elements in line with the recyclability principles contribute to improving plastic packaging’s circularity”.

RecyClass issues two types of recyclability approvals – technology approvals and product approvals – which are issued once testing has been carried out in accordance with one of the established Recyclability Evaluation Protocols. Testing results are incorporated in the RecyClass Design for Recycling Guidelines and its online tool.
