Plastics sorting facility to be built in Austria / Partnership with ARA for waste packaging
German waste management firn PreZero (Neckarsulm; www.prezero.com) has announced that it will erect a fully automatic sorting facility in Sollenauin, Austria, with the plant due to go onstream in the first quarter of 2025 with an input capacity of 104,500 t.

A company spokesperson said, “The site is set to sort 97,500 t of light packaging from household waste along with another 7,000 t of plastics bottles from commercial waste collection.”

At the same time, PreZero said it has agreed to partner with Austria’s leading packaging collection system Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA, Wien; www.ara.at). In the future, “more packaging waste from Austria is to be supplied to PreZero”, the company said. Details of the quantities were not disclosed.

Austria needs to raise its recycling volumes to meet EU recycling targets by 2025, when it will be compulsory to sort and recycle 80% of all packaging instead versus the current level of just under 60%.

Christian Kampmann, head of the sorting systems at PreZero, said Austria’s current 15 sorting facilities and their capacities of 1,000 t to 30,000 t/y are note enough to reach the goal.

ARA to add sorting plant
Meanwhile, ARA, together with compatriot environmental technology and railway logistics specialist Bernegger (Molln; www.bernegger.at) and Germany’s Duales System Holding (DSD, Cologne; www.gruener-punkt.de), plan to build a sorting plant for lightweight packaging in Ennshafen, Austria. Sorting capacity of the facility, set to star operations in 2025, is quoted at 100,000 t/y.

In 2022, ARA reported that 176,000 t of plastic and lightweight packaging had been collected from Austrian households, a 2.4% decline from the previous year.

On 1 January of this year, Austria introduced the uniform collection of lightweight packaging throughout the country. As a result, ARA said it expects the volume of plastics packaging collected to increase by 20%.
