POLYMER PRICES
Engineering Recyclate September 2016: Most prices continue to crumble / Primary market developments put recyclers under pressure / Demand subdued even after end to the holidays
The price of most recyclate grades covered in this report continued to slide in September, although the piecemeal declines were largely limited to smaller volume lots and specialised formulations located at the upper end of the Plasteurope.com price range. The downtrend was most pronounced for materials such as natural-grade rPA, rPC and rABS – the latter due mainly to the fall in the styrene notation. Despite the recent rise in virgin material feedstock prices, notations for the other regrind types remained unchanged in the final month of Q3. With primary material producers so far unable to factor the higher costs into their finished compounds, the secondary market has yet to feel any repercussions.

Demand remained subdued. Although order activity picked up at the end of the holiday period, it still fell short of expectations. Amid a lack of any type of impulse from the overall economic situation or seasonal effects, this is unlikely to change in October.

Nevertheless, producers of virgin PA and PC could try to pass down the higher feedstock and base polymer costs into the compounds chain. If they succeed, recyclers would be given a little more room to breathe. A lot will depend on the development of demand. Although the cost pressure on primary POM producers is also increasing, suppliers are concentrating their efforts on preventing the opening of an arbitrage window. That being the case, rPOM notations will most likely roll over, too.

September 2016
Price: EUR 1,640.00/t

Change against previous month: EUR -10.00/t
There were minor price corrections for small orders and more specialised grades, which were, however, primarily limited to the upper end of the Plasteurope.com range.

On the primary market, the EUR 20/t fall in the cost of September´s styrene contract led to a slight softening of polymer prices.

Supply: normal
After the end of the holiday period, all production plants resumed normal operations. Following a few rather sluggish weeks, availability of base material was plentiful.

Demand: normal
Although demand picked up after the holiday period, initial order activity remained comparatively weak.
Outlook October 2016
Price trend: little change
Notations are expected to remain stable in October. On the feedstock side, a certain consolidation is expected.

Supply: normal
Since all plants are operating normally, there are no indications of any significant changes.

Demand: normal
There are no changes in sight. There is an almost complete lack of any impetus from the economy or from seasonal effects.

Price: EUR 2,205.00/t

Change against previous month: EUR -10.00/t
Following the major price correction of the previous month, notations largely bottomed out. The few small aftershocks in September mostly affected only the top end of the range.

On the primary market, the final month of Q3 saw little movement on the compound price front despite the recent renewed increases in the cost of both feedstocks and base polymers.

Demand: normal

Outlook October 2016
Price trend: increasing
Virgin material producers will try to pass their higher feedstock and base polymer costs onto the compounds chain. If they succeed, recyclers would have a little more room to breathe. A lot will depend on how demand – which has been very slow of late – develops.

Supply: normal
The recent stabilisation on the recyclate market is expected to characterise October business, too.

Demand: normal
The anticipated rise in order activity has yet to set in. Most buyers are purchasing at short notice, and there can be no talk of any stockbuilding efforts. Caution prevails.
