Closure of PET plant in Spain announced / Producer cites lack of profitability
— By Plasteurope.com staff —

Spain’s Plastiverd (El Prat de Llobregat; www.plastiverd.com) has announced the permanent closure of its PET production facility at El Prat de Llobregat, with plans to sell. Around 90 jobs are affected by the measure, which the company said it has taken because the plant is no longer profitable.

The PET market is facing weak demand and fierce competition, which is disrupting producers’ prices and margins. Plastiverd criticised the high energy and regulatory costs as well as the strict environmental regulations, which it said massively impair the competitiveness of European manufacturers compared with competitors in East Asia, Egypt, and Turkey.

According to Plasteurope.com’s Polyglobe database, the PET plant at El Prat de Llobregat has a capacity of 210,000 t/y. Plastiverd’s parent company, CL Grupo Industrial (Badajoz, Spain; www.clgrupoindustrial.com), acquired the plant on the outskirts of Barcelona in 2014 from the insolvent La Seda group.
