PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Recycling: fantastic. Labels: NOT
— By Somya Abrol —

We are living in the golden age of polymer reincarnation. Yesterday’s plastic bottle can become today’s fleece. Polypropylene, once condemned to a brief existence as a yoghurt lid, may return as sportswear. The circular economy is giving plastics a second chance – and, occasionally, better tailoring.

All of that is brilliant. But then, the garment arrives with a label.

Thanks for the announcement, Tag (Photo: PIE)

Not a modest little whisper of information, but a substantial textile manifesto announcing RECYCLED, displaying a circularity symbol and confirming that the item is made from “100% recycled polyester”. Admirable, certainly. But the label itself is stiff, scratchy, and apparently trained to locate the most sensitive part of the human body.

The attached photograph captures the moment perfectly: one hand restraining the offending object while the wearer considers whether to tolerate it, remove it, or declare war.

It scratches. It folds. It curls into a tiny textile weapon. After washing, it may become softer, but never so soft that it abandons its mission. Eventually, scissors step in.

And this is where the circular economy becomes unexpectedly linear: from recycled bottle, to recycled fibre, to recycled garment, to landfill – not quite. But possibly to the bin, after a tense confrontation with a seam ripper.

If we can transform waste into clothing, if we can spin polymers into fibres, surely, we can also develop a label that does not behave like a paper wasp trapped inside a T-shirt.

So, let us make one modest request: next time, print the information directly onto the fabric.

The plastic has been successfully recycled. The label, meanwhile, remains a menace.
