PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Save the trees! For recycling.

You’re in a holiday pinch, Mr. Grinch. Picture this: you’ve nicked yet another Christmas tree, this time an artificial one from a family in Dublin, and it’s really taken a beating. Now to dispose of the thing – but how to do so responsibly? You’re something of a green guy, after all.

In a reported world first, a pilot project in the Irish capital is accepting old or damaged artificial Christmas trees for recycling. In November this year, tree manufacturer Balsam Hill (Dublin) launched Project reTREE in collaboration with local county councils, WEEE Ireland, and waste-management service providers Panda and Thorntons Recycling.
The new initiative – joining a citywide disposal scheme for real Christmas trees already in place for more than two decades – establishes return points at two recycling centres where Dubliners and Grinches alike can drop off their not-so-evergreens through 31 January 2026. Those who take part are to receive a discount voucher towards a new tree from Balsam Hill – but you’re not one for gifts, are you, Mr. Grinch?
