PLASTIC FANTASTIC
They call him…
Flipper the dolphin is and remains our hero and the subject of one of the most ear-worming songs in television history. No matter how difficult the situation was in the series, whenever our sleek ocean pal poked his bottlenose out of the water, we knew everything would be okay (so basically Lassie in the ocean).

Now, at the Fakuma plastics trade fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany, a large injection moulding machine maker is reprising the image of the cute, cackling marine mammal who promised weekly salvation. Every second, a high-tech injection press on the show floor spits out the elegantly modelled and miniature Flipper made – how fitting! – from recycled fishing nets. It seems unlikely that marine litter can become anything more beautiful, or appropriate, than an ever-growing pod of dolphins.
