USD 1 bn for illegal parking…and other issues

The owners of the now infamous containership Ever Given could be giving forever, or close to it, according to media reports that say the Suez Canal Authority is demanding payment of up to USD 1 bn for the vessel’s epic parking miscue that clogged the waterway for six days.

The ship is in custody in Egypt, where it will remain after a Cairo court recently ruled that the canal operator can hold the behemoth until a compensation settlement is completed with Ever Given owner Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd. Evergreen Marine Corp, the charterer of the ship, has reportedly expressed little concern about such a large fine, noting that the vessel was insured.
