PLASTIC FANTASTIC
A contemporary beach Madonna
Human history has created uncountable versions of Madonna figures. Even the fertility figures from the early Stone Age are seen by some as precursors. Early on they were mostly chiselled and polished from precious stones like marble, then the Renaissance brought forth Madonnas chastely carved in various types of wood for worshipping inside churches. In many parts of the world, they serve as icons and household patrons. US superstar Madonna, though not sacred in the same way, could be described as a living iconic version. The Dutch Klean Foundation (www.stichtingklean.nl) has now produced a 3D-printed 12-metre long, breastfeeding Madonna out of 100,000 waste PET bottles, to bring about awareness on the hot topic of beach littering. Now this is a classic example of trashy art.
