PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Next-generation Murano glass
Deceptively realistic and yet not glass – "Venice" tableware collection (Photo: Guzzini)
Italy is home to fashion and elegance, such as seen with the artistic products made from Venetian glassblowers in Murano. The sight of the famous cristallo glass, in the form of thin-walled, filigreed chalices and millefiori ornamentation, is thrilling not only for tourists. In the century of plastics, however, the Italians are pushing this elegance to a new level.

"Venice" is the name of a unique collection that, according to its designer, resembles the style of hand-blown glass "alla veneziana" – with carafes, ice cream bowls and cups made of styrene methyl methacrylate. The question is, will these also survive the thousand years that many crystal cups from the island of glassblowers have endured?
