Recycling and the genius in the bottle
Recycling is rewarding, and not just for the environment. Many countries have schemes in place that offer remuneration for those returning their plastic bottles to the store. Germany is among them. In a tale involving both genius and a bottle, one shop owner was recently charged with fraud against the returnable bottle system.
The accused had devised a mechanism that allowed him to fetch the same bottle from the machine before being shredded. It took 177,000 goes – worth about EUR 44,000 – before the authorities uncovered the crime.
