PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Buona notte PVC: A lullaby in D-minor
The tune begins – appassionato – a bright future for a country emerging from the shambles of war. The joyful tinkle continues, taking the audience to a dramatic crescendo about 20 years later. Fortissimo, as the song accompanies the deadly scandals surrounding VCM production in Porto Marghera. And on to fortepiano, with the image of PVC taking a beating internationally. Since then – lento, lento – the once powerful aria has started to quiet down. And now, with the equipment at Italy’s last remaining PVC plant up for sale to the highest bidder, a triste piano – and finito.
