PLASTIC BAGS
Ikea to charge customers in the UK
To discourage one-off use of plastic bags, Swedish furniture giant Ikea (www.ikea.com) will stop giving away bags to its UK customers. Customers will be charged five pence (5p) per bag until existing stocks run out. The price will then rise to 10p as biodegradable bags are introduced. At the same time, the furniture chain is cutting the price to 25p for its reusable "Big Blue Bags" sold in-store. The change in policy follows a two-year trial in Edinburgh that saw a 90% drop in consumption. Intake from bag sales will be donated to the Community Forests organisation.
