PLASTICS RECYCLING
PAFA welcomes government grant for mixed plastics recycling in the UK
Calling it a “major boost for mixed plastics recycling capacity”, the Packaging and Films Association (PAFA, Nottingham / UK; www.pafa.org.uk) has welcomed the UK government’s decision to award a grant to specialist recycler WES Greenstar (Redcar / UK; www.thewesgroup.co.uk) to recycle an additional 20,000 t/y of mixed plastic household waste. The EUR 1.36m grant was awarded by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP, Banbury / UK; www.wrap.org.uk) – see Plasteurope.com of 05.02.2010.
PAFA chief executive Barry Turner said he hopes the grant will herald a turnaround in UK recycling practices. So far, he said, local authorities’ performance has been measured in weight. As a result, lightweight plastic packaging largely have been ignored, despite their recyclability. Turner added that, “This major boost for mixed plastics recycling capacity should now help convince everyone that plastics are a very valuable resource which not only protect goods from damage and spoilage but also have a useful ongoing life.”
The next step, PAFA says, will be to install consistent collection systems across the UK.
