The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) became applicable on 12 August 2026. For Europe’s plastics industry, the focus is shifting from preparing for the rules to putting them into practice: interpreting requirements, reviewing packaging portfolios, and adapting processes across the supply chain.

The regulation reaches well beyond consumer packaging. It also covers industrial and production packaging, making implementation a concern for raw material producers, compounders, converters, recyclers, brand owners, and logistics providers alike.

In this PIE Industry Talk, Paolo Glerean, chairman of RecyClass and board member of Plastics Recyclers Europe, and Cristina Galán, head of Packaging Sustainability at the Spanish Association of Plastics Manufacturers (ANAIP), will share their early observations and practical perspectives. Each will give a short presentation before joining a discussion moderated by Somya Abrol, editor-in-chief of Plastics Information Europe.

The conversation will examine how the industry is responding, where converters, recyclers, brand owners and industrial packaging suppliers see the greatest challenges and opportunities, and what companies are doing to prepare their portfolios and operations. It will also look ahead to the next stages of implementation across the EU.
