European plastics recycling is facing another turbulent phase, as geopolitical uncertainty, market swings, and new regulation continue to put pressure on an already strained sector. That was the clear message from Plasteurope.com’s latest Industry Talk, European Plastics Recycling in Turbulent Times: Middle East Conflict, Market Swings & PPWR, which brought together Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) president Ton Emans and Koranis Purchasing Solutions managing director Dimitrios Koranis.
The discussion focused on what the industry needs in order to deal with the fresh volatility, in addition to the weak margins and difficult pricing conditions that it has been struggling with for a while. The speakers also pointed to the persistent gap between recycled and virgin plastics, a problem that continues to undermine demand for recyclate and complicate preparations for PPWR. Against that backdrop, the webinar underlined the need for greater market stability, confidence, and clearer policy support if Europe wants to strengthen its recycling base.
