Switzerland may launch packaging deposit
Switzerland may follow Germany's example and introduce a mandatory deposit on disposable plastic packaging if the country's recycling rate this year again falls short of the target. This is the message from the federal agency for the environmental, SAEFL (www.buwal.ch). Despite efforts to promote recycling, incuding 1,200 new collection points, an advertising campaign and mobile phone games, Switzerland's recycling rate fell from 72% in 2002 to 71% in 2003, as only 32,500 t of the 45,800 t of material consumed were recycled. Under Swiss law, a recycling rate of 75% is required.
