Explosion rocks Basell HDPE plant at Münchsmünster
An explosion and subsequent fire partly destroyed a 120,000 t/y HDPE plant operated by Basell Polyolefine, a subsidiary of the Basell group (Hoofddorp / The Netherlands; www.basell.com), at Münchsmünster / Germany on 10 December. One company firefighter was killed, another seriously injured while fighting the blaze, which local authorities said was caused by a leak of hexane, used as a processing aid for PE. The plant is likely to be down for several months.
