Speciality chemicals distributor and industrial minerals producer Omya (Oftringen / Switzerland; www.omya.com) has launched products made of functionalised calcium carbonates for PET applications, “OmyaPET”, in Europe. The new product is a cost-effective opacifier for the production of white, opaque PET bottles and BOPET films with a lower environmental footprint, for instance in ultra-high temperature milk bottles, according to the Swiss producer.

OmyaPET is said to meet EU 10/2011 food-contact requirements and is made from products certified by independent auditor Bureau Veritas (Piraeus / Greece; https://group.bureauveritas.com) as 100% recycled material.

In 2019, Omya launched a calcium carbonate product for use in biopolymers, in particular polylactic acid (see Plasteurope.com of 28.01.2019).
