MENSING
German recycler continues growth trajectory / Additional site acquired
— By Plasteurope.com staff —

The Mensing Group, which operates German recycling companies TM Recycling (Hohenwestedt; www.tm-recycling.com), AFA Nord (Hohenwestedt; www.afa-nord.de), and PFR Nord (Hohenwestedt; www.pfr-nord.de), has acquired another site near its existing production facilities in Hohenwestedt, Germany.

AFA managing director Marvin Mensing told Plasteurope.com that the newly acquired property covers an area of 43,000 m² and includes approximately 8,000 m² of hall space. This will be used in future for the storage of LDPE regranulates and PET flakes. He did not disclose the investment amount.

PFR Nord specialises in hot-washed PET flakes and, following production increases over the past two years, now has an output capacity of 50,000 t/y. AFA Nord, on the other hand, recycles around 24,000 t/y of used agricultural and packaging films made from LDPE. TM Recycling, which offers services in the classification, sorting, and marketing of plastics and recyclates, handles around 120,000 t/y, according to Marvin Mensing.

Earlier this year, Mensing also established the joint venture F+M Recycling in Hohenwestedt together with Fromm Holding (Steinhausen, Switzerland; www.fromm-pack.com), with the aim of recycling strapping bands and beverage bottles. Each partner holds a 50% stake. The plant, with an output capacity of around 15,000 t/y, is scheduled to start production in September 2025.

In January 2025, the Mensing Group also announced the withdrawal of LyondellBasell (LYB, Houston, Texas, USA; www.lyondellbasell.com) from a joint recycling venture. The polyolefins group sold its stake in LMF Nord to AFA Nord.

As Marvin Mensing has now confirmed, the group still intends to go ahead with the construction of a mechanical recycling facility for LDPE and LLDPE film waste from household and commercial collections, as originally planned with LYB. The plant is currently under construction, with production scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2026. Once operational, two processing lines – one for DSD household collections and another for commercial films – will recycle around 35,000 t/y of film waste to produce various grades of LDPE regranulate.
