German injection moulder opens new plant in Bulgaria / Focus on household goods for south-east Europe
Following eight months of construction, German injection moulder Mecalit (Lichtenau; www.mecalit.com) has officially opened its new plant in Plovdiv / Bulgaria. The inauguration took place on 20 September and was attended by Bulgarian president Rosen Plevneliev. Mecalit Bulgaria employs 35 workers who will manufacture plastic components for household goods. The company’s workforce is expected to rise to between 70-80 employees. Mecalit invested some EUR 7m in the new facility, which is located on more than 22,000 m2 of grounds.

During the official launch, Mecalit's managing director Michael Meier said the group is becoming more and more international in response to the increasingly globalised production of household goods. Mecalit Bulgaria is to cater to rising demand from south-east Europe, with a special focus on Bulgaria and Turkey. Aside from its main plant at group headquarters and the new Bulgarian unit, Mecalit also operates a plant in Lodz / Poland, and works together with a partner in China that manufactures top plates. The group’s total workforce comes to 450.
