KLÖCKNER PENTAPLAST
New service centre to replace UK site / Flexible packaging business from Delton
Klöckner Pentaplast UK (7 Commerce Park, Brunel Road, Theale, GB – Reading RG7 4AB) is to replace its UK manufacturing site for rigid PVC packaging films with a new service centre that will slit and distribute film sourced from the parent company´s Dutch factory, located in Weert. The service centre is expected to be close to the Isleworth production plant that is to shut – an announcement of its location is anticipated in the near future.

The UK plant at Isleworth, formerly Stanley Smith Plastics, was bought by Klöckner Pentaplast in July 1999 from Barlo, but the sale did not include the freehold for the premises. This was retained by Barlo and is now likely to be sold for residential development. At the time of purchase, it was agreed that Klöckner would vacate the site by July 2001. Currently, some 60 staff are employed at Isleworth, and UK managing director Steve Griffin says the plant´s closure will lead to redundancies, although numbers have yet to be finalised. However, he confirms that the company is looking to grow further in the UK.

The UK head office for Klöckner will remain in Theale, where there are 13 staff. This site also imports rigid PVC, PP and polyester films from the group´s mainland European sites, including three in Germany, two in Switzerland and the one at Weert. This is a different strategic business from that at Isleworth and the two activities operate as separate divisions of the company.

Meanwhile, the parent company, Klöckner Pentaplast GmbH (D-56401 Montabaur; www.kpfilms.com), is to acquire the flexible packaging business of Delton AG (D-61352 Bad Homburg), effective 1 April 2001. Included in the transaction are affiliate PK Druck und Verpackungen GmbH (Westendstr. 7, D-87488 Betzigau) and its subsidiaries P& E Verpackungen GmbH (D-87437 Kempten) and Ceta SA Emballages flexibles (CH-1896 Vouvry). Already a market leader in composite films for food packaging, Pentaplast said it plans to expand the flexible films activities, which employ 210 people and have annual sales of EUR 43m.
