Innovative work in composites recognised / Wide range of new plastics applications
JEC Group (Paris / France; www.jeccomposites.com) has announced the winners in its awards programme for the most innovative composite applications.

The award in the aeronautics and space category went to Huntsman Advanced Materials of Switzerland (www.huntsman.com), the UK´s University of Sheffield (www.shef.ac.uk) and Rolls Royce (www.rolls-royce.com) for their work in filling hollow fan blades with a vibration-damping composite material.

In the ground transport category, Jupiter Plast (www.jupiterplast.dk) of Denmark and Germany´s Siemens Mass Transportation (www.transportation.siemens.com) were recognised for the development of an impact-resistant composite structure for the front end of the "Avanto" tram-train model.

The F3P-RTM process for an eight-panel, Class A application for the Aston Martin "DB9" developed by Ford Motor Company (www.ford.com), Aston Martin (www.astonmartin.com), and Sotira (www.sora-composites.fr) was winner in the process category.

In the energy and industry category, a lighting pole with controlled energy absorption characteristics to make impacts with vehicles less dangerous won the award for Finnish companies Mikkeli,Tehomet (www.tehomet.fi), and Fibrocom (www.fibrocom.com).

The winners in the environment category were the Brazilian offshoot of Saint-Gobain Vetrotex (www.saint-gobainvetrotex.com) and RGF Projetos, also of Brazil, for the development of pole-top equipment for power lines to support the electrical wiring.

The sports and leisure category was won by the "Mantis HE" electric golf caddy developed by Schappe Techniques (www.schappe.com), Thermofusion (www.thermo-fusion.com), and Carbonfunctions Vertriebs (www.carbonfunctions.de), which employs a tube structure made of TPFL carbon-fibre reinforced thermoplastic.

Norwegian companies BBA, Reichhold (www.reichhold.com), Loe Betongelementer (www.loe.no),Tele Bryggen (www.telebryggen.no) and Selco Tek, along with Russia´s Kamenny Vek (www.basfiber.com), won the construction category for their work on composite reinforcement frames, designed to replace steel as reinforcement in concrete structures.
