Phenol/acetone activities in Germany to be discontinued

Sky-high energy prices and “blind devotion” (in the words of CEO Jim Ratcliffe) to an additional carbon tax are the reasons cited by Ineos (London; www.ineos.com) for the planned closure of its phenol and acetone plants at Gladbeck, Germany. From the company’s point of view, global overcapacity and cheap imports from China are also contributing factors, according to a recently concluded strategic review. A specific shutdown date has reportedly not yet been set.

According to a statement, the lack of competitiveness in Europe has already led to several customers withdrawing, which means that local demand is no longer sufficient to justify continuing the operation of the plant. At the same time, the production units – built in 1954 – would have required extensive investment in the future.
