GLYNWED / FRIATEC
Group reorganisation continuing / Biggest plastics pipe producer worldwide
For the first half of 1999, the pipe systems division of the British Glynwed International plc (De Montfort House, High Street, Coleshill, GB-Birmingham B46 3BP) has recorded a jump in sales over the previous year from GPB 175m to GBP 262.5m (around EUR 408m). A decisive factor in this development was the acquisition of Friatec AG (D-68222 Mannheim) in October 1998 (see PIE 20, 1998 / PIE 03, 1999 / PIE 13, 1999).
About two years ago, it was decided to completely reorganise the Glynwed Group, which originates from the metal sector. Of the former seven activity sectors, two now remain – with pipe systems and the “Consumer & Food Service Products” unit – and the focus is set to remain on these. About 80% of sales come from the pipe sector. After initial difficulties with the integration of Friatec, a market-oriented structure has now been attained in Glynwed pipe systems in continental Europe and Great Britain according to the company´s half-year report.
In July 1999, Glynwed acquired the Canadian plastic pipes giant, Ipex Inc (50 Valleybrook Drive, Don Mills, CA-Ontario M3B 2S9). Ipex recorded sales of CAD 400m in 1998 (around EUR 260m). This acquisition has made Glynwed into the world´s biggest pipe system producer. Glynwed is planning to further expand its business in the United States, on the basis of acquisitions or new plants.
